Serena Williams is set to return to professional tennis at Queen’s Club, bringing one of the sport’s biggest names back into competition for the first time since 2022.

Williams has accepted a wildcard into the doubles event and will partner Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko.

The comeback marks a significant moment for tennis, even before there is any clarity over whether it will lead to further appearances later in the summer.

Williams’ first event back will come in doubles, rather than singles. That format offers a measured route into competition after a long spell away from the tour. Williams has not played professionally since the 2022 US Open, where she lost to Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round.

Doubles is also a familiar part of her career record. Williams has won 14 Grand Slam women’s doubles titles, all alongside her sister Venus Williams.

Her partnership with Mboko adds another layer of interest. Mboko represents a much younger generation of players, while Williams returns as one of the most successful players in the sport’s history.

Williams’ comeback arrives with major attention on Queen’s Club

Williams’ return is likely to draw wider attention to Queen’s Club than the doubles event would usually receive.

Her career record remains central to that interest. She has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles, including seven at Wimbledon and six at the US Open.

Those numbers explain why even a doubles appearance carries significance. Williams is not returning as a standard former champion. She is returning as one of the defining figures of modern tennis.

There will also be interest in how she looks physically and competitively after nearly four years away from professional matches.

Further appearances are not yet confirmed

The Queen’s Club doubles entry is the confirmed part of Williams’ comeback. Wimbledon and the US Open may naturally be discussed because of her history at both tournaments, but neither should be treated as confirmed unless official entries follow.

That distinction is important. Williams’ return is significant on its own, without needing to be framed as the start of a full singles comeback.

For now, the story is simpler and still substantial: Serena Williams is back in a professional draw, and Queen’s Club will stage the first look at what this next chapter actually looks like.
