Former US Open champ Juan Martín del Potro was recently seen playing an exhibition match in Moldova, where his physical appearance took the spotlight. Fans have, however, defended Del Potro, whom many believed lacked the elite physical conditioning he once had on the red surface. The Chisinau venue is set to hold a challenger event sometime this week and has paid Del Potro to grace the court with his legendary presence.

Del Potro walked onto the Moldovan court wearing a black knee brace on his right knee to nurse his troubled knee injury to play at the inaugural game for the challenger event. He teamed up with the rising star Lia Belibova to play a mixed doubles exhibition on the new center court against Grand Slam legend Simona Halep and Moldova’s legend Radu Albot, who defeated the former pair 6-4, 2-6, 10-7.

Several videos have emerged from the exhibition bout showing Del Potro struggling to keep up with the clay endurance. Many have weaponized his clips to mock his movements. However, many tennis fans have come in support of Del Potro and reminded the digital world of how disrespectful it is to mock a legend for his current condition.

When a few compared the legend with Novak Djokovic, fans came out and wrote:

“Huh? Deeply hurt, retired for a long time, it’s already a miracle that he can still play and move like that. The comparison is pointless, I think.”

Someone wrote:

Yes, but Djoko hasn’t had all the serious injuries that Delpo has had…

One user wrote:

For the record, Juan is gonna suffer with his knee for the rest of his life. So yeah personally that doesn’t make me laugh

Another person wrote:

He’s been retired for four years, leave him alone

Someone else wrote:

Can we delete this post, it’s so disrespectful. You are just inviting trolls by making such a post

With all the defense, the world is witnessing how the tennis community cherishes Del Potro’s enduring legacy over a single stint that amounted to social media mockery. It remains to be seen what reaction Del Potro has to his critics.

Juan Martín del Potro has his Home Ransacked

Juan Martín del Potro has recently been through a tumultuous phase in his life after his home got ransacked, earlier this month by a group of specialized burglars. They broke into Del Potro’s home in Tandil, Argentina, and swept most parts of the house clean by pocketing cash, jewelry, and medals. Del Potro’s mother was the first to arrive at the scene, who immediately called in the authorities, who began the investigation.

Two Chilean men have now been arrested with a confirmation of being part of the gang that had robbed Del Potro’s home. The group was a part of the South American crime ring that targeted numerous high-profile athletes in the United States and in South and Central America.

The suspects are currently being held in the respective criminal jurisdictions and face multiple felony charges.
