Arthur Fils expresses frustration after forced Roland Garros withdrawal

Arthur Fils has expressed his frustration after being forced to pull out of Roland Garros due to injury.

The Frenchman, who picked up a hip issue during the Italian Open earlier this month, was slated to play Stan Wawrinka in his opening match before making the difficult decision to step away from his home Grand Slam.

Fils had been hoping for another strong showing in Paris after reaching the third round last year, where he pushed Francisco Cerundolo to five sets. Instead, he’ll have to watch from the sidelines as this year’s tournament gets underway without him.

His withdrawal is a blow not just for him but also for French fans who were eager to see a homegrown player make a deep run. Without Fils in the draw, that hope takes a significant hit before the tournament even gets fully underway.

Arthur Fils addresses fans after withdrawing from Roland Garros

Fils posted on his Instagram: “I won’t be able to play Roland Garros this year.

“I did everything I could to be ready.

“This tournament means everything to me and not being able to compete here is one of the toughest things I’ve had to face.

“I know what I’m capable of.

“Right now, I’m just not there.

“See you soon.”

The 19-year-old has dealt with a number of injuries in his young career and this latest setback is another tough blow for the Frenchman. But Fils will hope that taking time away from the court now will allow him to return stronger later in the season.

Arthur Fils’ ATP Record

Fils has won four titles on the ATP Tour, including one in Barcelona earlier this year.

The 21-year-old was out for eight months with a back injury, but since returning in February, he’s put together an impressive run.

He’s posted a 22-7 record so far in 2026 and climbed his way back into the ATP top 20.

Statistically speaking, Fils has been among the best under pressure recently, even topping Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner in clutch points won per match this season.

But it’s still unclear how long this latest setback will keep him out. The timing couldn’t be worse for a player who had just started to build momentum again.
