We are just two days into the 2026 French Open, and there is already plenty of drama at Roland Garros.
1. Blistering abnormal heat
It has been hot and dry in Paris. Typical May temperature is 68 degrees, but in the opening days, it has reached 90 degrees.
Ballkids and tennis players have felt it. In the Andrey Rublev vs. Ignacio Buse first round match, a ballgirl suffered a heat stroke.

2. Hotly contested ball marks
Electronic line calling is not being used at the French Open so we are back to the age old debate of identifying ball marks and watching the chair umpire get in and out of his or her chair to examine them with the players.
There are also line judges on the court which we have grown unaccustomed to seeing since most tournaments have gone to ELC and eliminated all tournament personnel on the court except for ballkids.

3. Emotional first round upsets
If Day 1 and Day 2 are any indication, we are in for a roller coaster ride at Roland Garros this year. 2021 French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova, Emma Raducanu, Taylor Fritz, and 2024 Paris Olympics gold medalist Qinwen Zheng lost their opening matches. All have been sidelined with injury and unable to fully prepare and play this clay court season.

Raducanu and Zheng were especially vulnerable and emotional in postmatch press conferences.
