Navarro wins Strasbourg Open to end wait for title

American Emma Navarro claimed her first title in more than a year as she beat top seed Victoria Mboko to win the Strasbourg Open.

Navarro, the 25-year-old former world number eight, put in a superb performance to beat her 19-year-old Canadian opponent 6-0 5-7 6-2 and claim a third WTA title and first on clay.

Having struggled with illness and been forced to withdraw from a number of tournaments, the victory is a timely boost for Navarro before the French Open, which begins on Sunday.

“It’s kind of been a little bit of a rocky year and a half or so, but I think we put in a lot of really good work,” said Navarro, who began the week ranked 39th.

Meanwhile, there was another American winner at the men’s Geneva Open as 20-year-old Learner Tien beat Argentina’s Mariano Navone 3-6 6-3 7-5 to secure the second ATP title of his career.

Tommy Paul was unable to make it a hat-trick of wins for the United States as Peruvian qualifier Ignacio Buse stunned the sixth seed to triumph 7-6 (8-6) 4-6 6-3 in the Hamburg Open final.

After coming through a match that lasted more than three hours, Buse becomes the first Peruvian ATP Tour title winner since Luis Horna won at Vina del Mar in 2007.

Elsewhere, Croatia’s Petra Marcinko won the first title of her career on the WTA tour at the Morocco Open.

The world number 76 was leading 6-2 3-0 just 46 minutes into the final when Ukrainian opponent Anhelina Kalinina retired from the match.
