Mboko vs Fernandez Head-to-Head Record
This will be their second meeting on the WTA Tour. They last met at last yearâs Hong Kong Open, where Mboko overcame Fernandez in three sets.
Fernandez has found some form on clay this year, reaching the quarterfinals in Stuttgart and Madrid. However, she arrived in Strasbourg on the back of two straight defeats and had to do it the hard way to qualify for the quarterfinals.
The seventh seed prevailed 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 against FrÄch in a match that lasted nearly three hours. She did well to convert 5 break-point opportunities and utilized her drop shot to great effect.
Mboko had only played one singles match on clay this year prior to her second-round clash against Boisson (second-round loss to Caty McNally in Madrid). But she cruised to a 6-4, 6-3 win against the clay-court specialist, backed by her confident ball-striking and strong court-coverage.
After reaching two finals earlier in the year, Mboko will have her sights set on a deep run in Strasbourg to set up a platform for a strong French Open showing.
Mboko vs Fernandez Prediction and Pick
The world No. 9 is enjoying a better season overall and will be the favorite to win. But Fernandez has gained more clay-court experience this year and has enjoyed two impressive runs on the red dirt in the lead-up to the French Open.
The key for Fernandez has been her relentless energy and ability to create awkward angles for her opponents as a left-handed player. She came close to defeating Elena Rybakina in Stuttgart and saw off Iva Jovic in Madrid before losing to Mirra Andreeva in another tight match.
Mbokoâs lack of playing time on clay could be an issue for her as she gets ready for her second French Open appearance. But she has quickly established herself as one of the most consistent players on the WTA Tour and has the baseline game to make a strong impact on clay.
Fernandez will hope to take advantage of any rust Mboko might be feeling to pull off an upset. But if the 19-year-old can dominate the early exchanges and get into her groove, this match could finish very quickly.
Pick â Mboko in straight sets.
