Martha’s Vineyard girls tennis caps undefeated 16-0 regular season

The Barnstable boys volleyball were one of the hottest teams in the state as they started the season 15-1.

The Red Hawks (16-4) then lost the next three matches, but won the last match of the regular season with a 3-0 win over Taunton to build some momentum for the state tournament, where they are currently ranked 11th in Division 1.

Brady Kundel led with 10 kills, Wesley Sullivan had six kills, Joao Pedro Andrade and Rafael Ferias had five kills each, Leayon Brooks had four kills and Matheus Alvarenga added three kills. Alvarenga distributed the ball well with 26 assists. 

Enzo Santos and Kundel had seven digs each, while Ferias had five digs. Andrade had two blocks for a team-high.

Alvarenga, Andrade and Kundel had two aces apiece. 

In other high school action:

Baseball 

West Bridgewater 15, Bourne 10: The Canalmen (4-14) finished a game that was postponed due to rain after six innings that was tied 10-10. The Canalmen gave up five runs in the top of the seventh inning. Ronan Kelly and Tucker Muldoon had two hit each, while six other batters recorded one hit.

Cape Tech 5, Sturgis 4: The Crusaders (8-8) were down 4-1 in the seventh inning and came back to beat Sturgis (4-8). Tucker Enos pitch five innings, stuck out six, gave up two unearned runs, three walks, and also had two hits and one RBI at the plate. Will Mullin closed the game out after hitting the fist two batters in the bottom of the seventh and then struck out the next three batters to end the game. Mason Tomlinson had a pair of hits, Brayden Wright had the tying run and Brody Mumford had two hits.

Softball

Monomoy 5, Wareham 4: The Sharks (13-5) snapped a two-game losing streak. Kiley Mawn had three hits (two RBis, one run, one double), while Kate Huse (two runs), Lexi Totten (two RBIs, two runs and Sabrina Bassett (one RBI, one double) each had two hits. Kinsey Lister went seven innings, scattered seven hits, gave up one earned run and struck out 10 on the mound.

Falmouth 5, Nantucket 3: The Clippers (6-12) snapped a three-game slide to end their regular season as they beat the Whalers (3-11).

Ellie Bennett struck out nine in the win and was 3-for-4 with one scored run. Katie Medeiros went 3-for-4, with two doubles and one run. Tenley Briggs had two hits and one double, and Grace Bennett and McIntyre Bradley had one hit each.

Pitching:

Girls Lacrosse

Norwell 20, Mashpee 4: The Falcons (12-6) fell to the second-ranked team in Division 3. Ciara Hendricks had two goals, while Sophia Morin and Claire Howard had one goal each. Riley Thomas made four saves, reaching 500 for her career.

Boys Tennis

Monomoy 4, Bourne 1: The Sharks (11-7) closed out their regular season with a win over the Canalmen (10-9).

Roman Pavluchenko defeated Jonathan Santucci 6-4, 6-3 in first singles and Ethan Seufert beat Doug Lunedei 6-3, 6-4 in second singles. Patrick McMahon and Tom Hereford defeated Landon Hope and Brady Russell 6-2, 6-1 in first doubles, while Khush Patel and John Sene beat Ryan Conlon and Caden Dion 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 in second doubles.

James Kirby defeated Ben Cao 6-1, 6-0 in third singles.

Cape Cod Academy 4, Sturgis West 1: The Seahawks (14-2) ended their regular season with a win over the Navigators (9-5).

Ben Catalano defeated Ray Zhang 6-1, 6-4 in first singles, Garrett Wilson beat George Foster 6-1, 6-0 in second singles and Connor Hall won third singles over Kieran Murphy 6-4, 6-0. Rowan Lewison and Austin Newhall beat Mason Smith and Adam Alharty 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 in first doubles.

Baylor Bowen and Michael Petaev defeated Nicholas Brown and Silas Zhang 6-4, 6-2 for Sturgis West.

Girls Tennis

Martha’s Vineyard 5, Barnstable 0: The Vineyarders (16-0) finished their regular season with 16 straight wins as they swept the Red Hawks (6-9).

Laina Dubin defeated Sophie Davis 6-0, 6-0 in first singles, Charlotte Marshard beat Kate  Candinho 6-0, 6-1 in second singles and Josey Johns won third singles over Ava Przgoda 6-0, 6-0.

Leah Thomson and Zoe Treitman beat Annie Richardson and Summer Marides 6-1, 6-0 in first doubles, while Tessa Schulz and Bella Schilling defeated Gianna Devoe and Kiky Case 6-1, 6-0 in second doubles.

Monomoy 5, Bourne 0: The Sharks (16-2) finished their regular season on a three-game win streak as they swept the Canalmen (11-8).

Ella Cutter beat Lily Russell 6-0, 6-0 in first singles, Darcy Addison defeated Ainsley Hopwood 7-5, 6-0 in second singles and Alexa Spirito won third singles over Zoe Noonan 6-0, 6-0.

Madi Mahfouz and Alexa babes-deel beat Sophia Halunen and Ella Swierkowski 7-5, 6-4 in first doubles, while Olivia Rezk and Lauren Laselva defeated Arianna McCarthy and Sydney Key 6-3, 6-1 in second doubles.

Nauset 4, St. John Paul II 1: The Warriors (4-1) avenged a loss to the Lions (8-9) in the season opener with a win. Anjali O’Brien defeated Lexi Sadlemire 6-2, 6-0 in first singles, Samantha Gomez beat Sophie Martins 6-0, 6-0 in second singles and Sophia Votteler won third singles 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 over Emily Desruisseau. Haley Jackson and Callie Murphy defeated Ella Corcoran and Maria Roncelli 1-6, 6-6(7-4), 6-3 in first doubles.

Ava Poweil and Isabella Loffredo defeated Olivia Vining and Daniela Chianciola 6-1, 6-2 for JPII.

Girls Golf 

Monomoy 3 ½, Nauset 2 ½: The Sharks (7-6) defeated the Warriors (9-5) at Captains Starboard. Ava LaRocco beat Sophia Silvestri 2-up, Gianna LaRocco defeated Finley Williams 4 and 3 and Lexi Goode beat Lilah Baer 1-up for Monomoy.

Emma Levya beat Georgia Stoney 2 and 1 and Tiffany Gomez defeated Lizzie Cronin 4 and 2 for Nauset.
