2026 French Open: Updated list of who will not play

As the 2026 French Open at Roland Garros gets closer, with main draw action beginning on May 24, the list of players not participating is growing.

Spoiler alert, there is a former Grand Slam champion, former Roland Garros quarterfinalists, and a French Open semifinalist on the list.

Who we already knew

The ATP side was more decimated with defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, Jack Draper, Lorenzo Musetti, and Holger Rune out of this year’s tournament recovering from injuries.

Who failed to qualify

Grigor Dimitrov and David Goffin failed to qualify. Both 35 year old tennis stars are previous Roland Garros quarterfinalists (2024: Dimitrov and 2016: Goffin). Goffin’s premature exit is bittersweet as he announced this is his final year on the ATP Tour.

Paula Badosa, the 2021 French Open quarterfinalist, chose not to go through qualifying and did not get a wildcard. 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu lost in the second round of qualifying. Karolina Pliskova, who has mounted a great 2026comeback after years of injuries sidelined her, also lost in the second round of qualifying. Pliskova was a 2017 semfinalist.

Who else could potentially not play

Joao Fonseca and Alexander Zverev are dealing with injuries, and some are concerned they could withdraw. No word from either player’s team has indicated a withdrawal will happen so we will keep an eye on them.

On the fringe and of concern are Madison Keys, who sustained an injury at the WTA 125 Paris Challenger final on Sunday and retired while leading the match. Amanda Anisimova, who has been practicing and on the grounds, is also one to watch as she has been dealing with a wrist injury and has not played any clay court tennis this spring before the French Open.

Another big name on the fringe is Sloane Stephens who won two qualifying matches, and she needs one more win to get into the main draw. Stephens is hoping to do double duty by playing and doing media work with TNT Sports, the US broadcaster of this year’s French Open.
