Roland Garros is almost here, and Frances Tiafoe will be aiming to build on his impressive showing in Paris from last year.

After years of early exits, Tiafoe finally made a breakthrough at the French Open in 2025, reaching the quarterfinals without dropping a set along the way.

He posted routine wins over Sebastian Korda and Daniel Altmaier before running into Lorenzo Musetti, who ended Tiafoe’s run in four sets. Musetti went on to lose to Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinals.

This year, though, Tiafoe hasn’t had the clay-court preparation he would have liked ahead of Roland Garros.

Frances Tiafoe reflects on his 2026 clay-court season ahead of Roland Garros

Tiafoe opened his clay-court season at the Houston Men’s Clay Court Championships, where he picked up two wins.

The world number 21 then withdrew from both Monte-Carlo and Madrid, and managed to clinch just one victory in Rome. He’s now in Hamburg and looking to finally get a string of good results under his belt.

“I’ve just been trying to get my body back right,” said Tiafoe in an interview with Tennis TV. “I’ve had a few hiccups with my body, had to pull out of Monte-Carlo, and for Madrid I wasn’t quite ready.

“Then I came to Rome, and it’s hard when you take a little bit of time off and try to get going and put your best out there. At least I got a match in there.

“It’s tough to say, but now all eyes are on the French Open, so here (Hamburg) I want to get a few matches in me, good quality matches, and we’ll see where we go.”

Frances Tiafoe claims opening victory at Hamburg Open

Frances Tiafoe got his Hamburg Open campaign off to a strong start, defeating 18-year-old local talent Diego Dedura on Sunday.

The eighth seed eased through the match, claiming a 6-4, 6-4 win over the German teenager to move into the next round.

The tournament field features several notable names this year, including Felix Auger-Aliassime and Ben Shelton.

Tiafoe’s next opponent will be either Daniel Elahi Galan or Roman Safiullin.
