UNC women’s tennis earned their spots hosting the Michigan Wolverines last weekend, prevailing 4-2 in a match that went the distance.
NCAA matches feature an opening doubles face-off, one set each, winner take all. UNC’s Reese Brantmeier and Alanis Hamilton picked up half a point, winning their set 6-2. Meanwhile, Tatum Evans and Oby Kajuru fought their way to the other half point with a 6-4 results. UNC’s depth in doubles has been a strength for the team in its battles against ranked opponents.
This one came down to the wire. In singles, Brantmeier, ranked 2nd nationally, had a rough day, losing in straight sets to 8th ranked Piper Chamey. However, depth came through for the Tar Heel again, with Anna Frey, Kajuru, and Evans securing the points to close out a 4-2 win. Evans won her match 5-7, 7-5, 7-5, while teammate Thea Rabman lead 6-5 in the 3rd set in the suspended final match.
UNC next faces last year’s national runner-up and 2024 national champion, Texas A&M. The Aggies feature the nation’s top ranked player, Lucciana Perez of Peru. Perez is undefeated this season in singles at 25-0. Like the Tar Heels, the Aggies feature a number of ITA ranked players, including #50 Mia Kupres, #71 Ilinca Amariel, #98 Daria Smetannikov, and #106 Lexington Reed. That’s eight players in the top 120 and the nation’s two best. Expect some tough, compelling competition with some high-level play.
The match will start at 7 pm this evening at Georgia’s Dan Magill Tennis Complex. While links have not been updated at press, you can stream the competition via the ITA website Division 1 Women’s Tennis page, found here.
