Arizona men’s tennis came up short in NCAA Quarterfinals action on Thursday, falling to top seed Wake Forest 4-1 in Athens, Ga.
The No. 8 Wildcats were in their first-ever appearance at the eight-team NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships.
Wake Forest jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point with victories on the top two courts. The Demon Deacons extended their lead with a win on singles court No. 2, where Wake Forest’s Mees Rottgering topped Arizona’s Filip Gustafsson in straight sets.
Wake Forest’s lead grew to 3-0 with a straight set victory on court No. 5, as Glib Sekachov fell to Aryan Shah.
Arizona’s lone point of the match came on court No. 3, where Alexander Rozin swept Wake Forest’s Luca Pow 6-3, 7-5.
Wake Forest clinched the match on court No. 6, with Alejandro Arcila falling to the Demon Deacons’ Jo Guillme in three sets.
Arizona’s All-American senior Jay Friend led on court No. 1 by a score of 7-6, 6-7, 5-3 at the conclusion of the match.
Arizona finishes the season with a 25-4 record. The Wildcats won the Big 12 regular season championship and advanced past the Sweet 16 for the first time.
Clancy Shields’ progarm should return a majority of players, with Friend being the only graduating senior.
