Boys tennis roundup: Willmar Cardinals bow out in Section 8AA opener

May 13—BECKER — The Willmar boys’ tennis team bowed out of the first round of the Section 8AA playoffs.

The 12th-seeded Cardinals lost to seventh-seeded Monticello 6-1 on Wednesday.

Willmar’s lone win came in No. 1 singles. Senior Carter Newberg won the first set against the Magic’s William Kuhn 7-6 (7). Newberg won the second set by default.

The Cardinals turn their attention to the 8AA individual tournament. Willmar begins the 8AA-South sub-section individual tournament on Tuesday at Monticello.

Minnewaska was 3-0 in doubles play in a victory over Redwood Valley at Redwood Falls.

It was the regular-season finale for the Lakers.

Minnewaska’s Marshall Kopp and Landon Schiffler fought off a tight second set from Rick Green and Andri Geisser to win at No. 1 doubles, 6-4, 7-5.

The Lakers begin Section 8A play on Monday.
