Iga Swiatek delivered her most impressive display of the season, cruising past Jessica Pegula at the Italian Open on Wednesday afternoon.
Swiatek was in complete control from start to finish, wrapping up a 6-1, 6-2 win in just over an hour at the Foro Italico.
She now leads their head-to-head 6-5 on the WTA Tour, breaking a previously even split.
Swiatekâs recent performances have placed her in elite company alongside names like Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova.
Iga Swiatek has won 43 of her 50 clay-court matches at the WTA 1000 level
Swiatekâs latest match against Pegula marked her 50th clay-court contest at WTA 1000 level, and sheâs now up to 43 wins from those outings.
OptaAce noted that since the format was introduced in 2009, only Serena Williams had more victories after her first 50 WTA 1000 matches on clay.
Williams, a holder of 23 Grand Slam titles, had racked up an impressive tally of her first half-century of such matches on the surface.
While Swiatek fell just short of matching Serenaâs early record, she did edge past Maria Sharapova, who had won two fewer over the same span.
Swiatek will look to add to her tally in Thursdayâs semi-final against either Elena Rybakina or Elina Svitolina as she chases a fourth title in Rome.
Iga Swiatek shares thoughts on preparation ahead of Roland Garros
Iga ĆwiÄ tek is looking to claim her fifth Roland Garros title next month, and all signs suggest sheâs hitting her stride just in time.
After her dominant display at the Italian Open, ĆwiÄ tek was asked about how performances like these impact her confidence heading into the rest of the clay season, particularly with Paris in mind.
âWell, the goal was to play as many matches as possible,â she explained.
âIâm really happy that I just have opportunity to do that because I felt like I didnât play a lot at all, comparing to last season.
âIâm happy that, yeah, I can spend some time on the court and play really solid matches against the best girls. For sure itâs giving me confidence because you can practice as much as possible, but if you donât test it out on the court, play matches and face pressure or something, youâre going to still feel the little bit rusty when it comes.â
