Jannik Sinner got off to an uncharacteristically slow start in 2026, falling in the Australian Open semifinals against Novak Djokovic and the quarterfinals in Doha against Jakub Mensik. Following the latter defeat, he promised to be back stronger.

And come back stronger he did. Sinner has been unbeatable since those two losses to start the year. First, he conquered the Sunshine Double in March without dropping a single set before taking to the clay in Monte Carlo and winning another trophy, beating his rival Carlos Alcaraz in the process.

This week, Sinner kept his winning streak going with a dominant triumph at the Madrid Open, the fourth Masters 1000 of the year. It is Sinner’s fifth-straight title at Masters 1000 level dating back to the Rolex Paris Masters last fall, making him the first player ever to win five such tournaments in a row. Novak Djokovic (three times) and Rafael Nadal each had a streak of four Masters titles in a row.

The Italian dropped his first set of the week against Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi, but he was imperious from there on out. After comfortably closing out Bonzi in a decider, Sinner ran the table with straight-set victories over Elmer Moller, Cam Norrie, Rafael Jodar and Arthur Fils before dominating World No. 3 Alexander Zverev 6-1, 6-2 in the championship match on Sunday.

Sinner, who reclaimed the No. 1 ranking in the world with his win over Alcaraz in the Monte Carlo final, has now won eight of the nine  Masters 1000 tournaments in his career, will look to become the second man (after Djokovic) to complete the full set at the Italian Open in Rome starting on Wednesday.

The Italian is gearing up to make a deep run in Paris at the second major of the season, Roland Garros, later this month where he will be shooting to complete the career grand slam. With Alcaraz sidelined with a right wrist injury and unable to defend his titles in both Rome and Paris, Sinner will enter as a heavy favorite to continue his winning streak and sweep the clay court season.
