Patrick Mouratoglou backs Sinner and Alcaraz to surpass Federer’s legacy
Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz could end up becoming even better players than Roger Federer, at least according to Patrick Mouratoglou.
The pair never had the chance to face Federer, who retired in 2022, before they hit their prime.
Since then, Sinner and Alcaraz have taken over the sport, winning every Grand Slam title since the start of the 2024 season.
Patrick Mouratoglou says Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz have ‘no weaknesses’
Speaking to Spazio Tennis, Mouratoglou shared his thoughts on the differences between Sinner and Alcaraz, even drawing a parallel between Sinner and Rafael Nadal.
“I think that Jannik and Carlos are opposite personalities, so different,” said Mouratoglou. “Carlos needs to be happy on the court in order to play his tennis, to be creative. If he’s not happy, because he had too much tennis, he’s not excited anymore, then he is a different player.
“Jannik, no. Jannik is incredible…he has something of Nadal in a way. He plays full every point, every single match from the 1st January to the 31st December.”
Mouratoglou was also asked if there are any players who might challenge their current dominance but suggested that this isn’t likely right now.
The Frenchman claimed that Sinner and Alcaraz have ‘no weaknesses’, which Mouratoglou explained was not the case for the likes of Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras and Federer.
“Those two guys have something in common, they are very different, they have completely different game, completely different personalities, but they have something in common, they have zero weakness, zero,” said Mouratoglou.
“If my player would have to play against any of those, I cannot give them a tactic, well, I can but it is not a tactic that would be focussed on the weakness on any of the two guys, they don’t have any weaknesses.
“If you remember Agassi and Sampras, for example, best two players in the world, had a lot of weaknesses. They had a lot of strengths; some of their shots were incredible, but they had a lot of weaknesses. Even Roger had some kind of weakness that Nadal could use against him, but in today’s world of tennis, those two guys have no weakness.
“So to have someone who can challenge those two guys in terms of mindset, in terms of having no weakness, in terms of having incredible strengths, in terms of being unreal athletes, incredibly strong mentally, the challenge is quite high yes.”
