Frances Tiafoe posts prophetic message after Hailey Baptiste’s Madrid Open win

Tennis fans know that Frances Tiafoe and Hailey Baptiste are close friends with plenty in common.

Both are from the Washington, DC area. Tiafoe’s twin brother Franklin also served as Baptiste’s coach in 2025.

The injured Tiafoe is sitting out the 2026 Mutua Madrid Open. However, he is like the rest of the American tennis fan base, watching Baptiste’s career explode in real time.

What Tiafoe wrote

Tiafoe posted a photo of Baptiste celebrating the win with the John 13:7 Bible verse: “You may not know now…but later you’ll understand.”

Audio of the verse is also shared (but not in Tiafoe’s voice) with the explanation of staying patient and steadfast and keeping eyes on God.

Tiafoe, 28, has always been a big brother figure to the 24-year-old Baptiste so this is consistent with something an older sibling or mentor would say in the situation.

All eyes on Baptiste on Thursday

Baptiste will play her semifinal match against Mirra Andreeva who has a 1-0 head-to-head edge over her.

Regardless of the outcome, Baptiste is a big winner in Madrid with wins over Jasmine Paolini, Belinda Bencic, and Aryna Sabalenka in three consecutive rounds.

With her live ranking safely within the Top 30, she will be seeded at the French Open. Clay is her favorite surface, and she is reaping the benefits of the hard work on a surface that Americans tend not to like.
