Owen Lappinga wins marathon match; Jacks breeze through triangular

Apr. 21—SAUK RAPIDS — While most of Tuesday’s matches for the Bemidji High School boys tennis team were finished in two sets, Owen Lappinga’s bout against Willmar went the distance.

The Lumberjacks’ sophomore at No. 1 singles dropped his first set against Willmar’s Carter Newberg, 6-3. Lappinga trailed 5-1 in the second set before rallying to a 7-6 final to level the set score. Lappinga ultimately won the tiebreaker 10-6 to cap a two-and-a-half-hour match and a pair of 7-0 wins for BHS.

The Jacks rolled past Sauk Rapids-Rice and Willmar without dropping a set.

Lappinga, Blake Friese, Josh Arel and Elihu Broten each won two singles matches. The duos of Peter Mathews and Ethan Frank, Chase Fairchild and Hudson Moussa, and Logan Berg and Paul Gifford each won two matches in straight sets.
