Is there a WTA one slam champion curse

Marketa Vondrousova, the 2023 Wimbledon champion, made news this week as she is under investigation for allegedly denying entry of a person into her house to conduct a doping test.

Vondrousova has been diagnosed with anxiety disorders along with her well publicized injuries. She also described the fear of not knowing who the person was, claiming that person did not identify himself properly. Vondrousova cited her Czech compatriot Petra Kvitova’s tragedy of being the victim of a break in and stabbing that nearly ended her career.

No matter where fans sit on the Vondrousova debate; was she correct in handling the situation as she did? (It is hard to say without walking in her shoes). There is starting to feel like a WTA one Grand Slam win curse affecting Vondrousova, Bianca Andreescu, and Emma Raducanu.

Vondrousva, Andreescu, and Raducanu plucked from obscurity

All three women won the Grand Slam (Andreescu: 2019 US Open and Raducanu 2021 US Open) from relative obscurity.

Vondrousova was unseeded for her championship Wimbledon run, and Raducanu was a qualifier.

Raducanu’s Grand Slam win is her only WTA title to date while Vondrousova and Andreescu have three each.

Since their wins, they have dealt with injuries, illnesses, and mental health challenges.

Their journeys show just how difficult and unforgiving professional tennis is. It is very difficult to be consistent and win regularly on the WTA Tour.

What about the other one slam winners?

Four more women are in this group, and three are American: Sofia Kenin (2020 Australian Open), Madison Keys (2025 Australian Open), Sloane Stephens (2017 US Open), and Latvian Jelena Ostapenko (2017 French Open).

Keys and Stephens were established players when their winning moments occurred. It does not mean they did not struggle before and after, but they were household names at the time of their victories.

Ostapenko and Kenin have also gone through typical ebbs and flows in their careers but have stayed relevant in doubles when their singles results have not been what they hoped.

No matter what else happens, these women will forever be known as Grand Slam champions. They have achieved tennis immortality with their wins.
