Tennis roundup: Wheelersburg defeats Clay, West by 4-1 margins

The Wheelersburg Pirates’ boys tennis program won two SOC matches over the past three days Tuesday and Thursday, as Wheelersburg claimed 4-1 triumphs over West on Tuesday, April 14 and Clay on Thursday, April 16 to put itself in a three-way tie with Clay and Waverly atop the SOC standings.

Tuesday, April 14 — Wheelersburg 4, West 1

Against West, Wheelersburg won 36 out of its 43 games available in singles play en route to claiming a 4-1 triumph over West.

The top three singles talents of Kody Evans, Luke Sarver and Cash Watkins each won in straight sets, with Evans and Sarver sweeping all six games in their second set affairs to claim the victory.

West’s Max Bell and Michael Grovoski was able to defeat Wheelersburg’s Brady Schomburg and Mason Billiter by a 6-3, 6-2 count at No. 1 doubles, but Wheelersburg countered with a win at No. 2 doubles, as Alex Richey and Isaac Mott defeated Humble Moore and Evan Stiles by a 6-3, 7-5 margin to conclude the match’s proceedings.

SINGLES:

No. 1 singles — Kody Evans (Wheelersburg) def. Eli Blevins (West) 6-1, 6-0

No. 2 singles — Luke Sarver (Wheelersburg) def. Chloe Bryant (West) 6-3, 6-0

No. 3 singles — Cash Watkins (Wheelersburg) def. Chas Bryant (West) 6-1, 6-2

DOUBLES:

No. 1 doubles — Max Bell/Michael Grovoski (West) def. Brady Schomburg/Mason Billiter (Wheelersburg) 6-3, 6-2

No. 2 doubles — Alex Richey/Isaac Mott (Wheelersburg) def. Humble Moore/Evan Stiles (West) 6-3, 7-5

Thursday, April 16 — Wheelersburg 4, Clay 1

In a highly competitive SOC match, the Wheelersburg Pirates’ boys tennis program defeated the Clay Panthers’ tennis program by a 4-1 margin, setting up a three-way tie between Clay, Wheelersburg and Waverly at the top of the SOC heap at 4-1 overall.

Kody Evans and Luke Sarver headed the charge for the Pirates, as Evans claimed a 6-3, 6-4 win over Caroline Ridenour at No. 1 singles while Sarver added in a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Ford Swords at the No. 2 position. Clay got a win from Billy Miller at No. 3 singles as Miller defeated Cash Watkins by a 6-2, 6-0 count.

In doubles competition, the tandem of Brady Schomburg and Mason Billiter defeated Clay’s Taylor Culbertson and Jason Wang, who had been previously unbeaten as a doubles tandem, by a 6-2, 7-5 margin with Schomburg and Billiter winning a thrilling 10-8 tiebreaker. Alex Richey and Isaac Mott threw in a 6-3, 6-3 win over Sophia Craft and Isaiah George at the No. 2 doubles position to conclude matters.

Wheelersburg is now 10-1 in 2026 and 6-1 in the SOC.
