Novak Djokovic has not played since Indian Wells in early March. Fans anticipated his return to the tennis court at the upcoming Mutua Madrid Open.
Djokovic recently shared a generic assessment on his health that created doubt about his ability to play the ATP 1000 tournament and his first of the European clay court season. He cited âphysical problemsâ as causing him difficulties.
It now appears that Djokovic has reached a final decision on his participation in Madrid.

What he announced on social media
Djokovic told his followers on social media that he will not play in Madrid.
He said: âMadrid, unfortunately I wonât be able to compete @MutuaMadridOpen this year. Iâm continuing my recovery in order to be back soon. Hasta pronto!â
With Carlos Alcaraz, Jack Draper, and Taylor Fritz dealing with injuries, the European clay court swing is not exactly building momentum and excitement in the leadup to the French Open.

Djokovicâs future plans
Unless something catastropic occurs, we expect to see Djokovic at Roland Garros next month. He probably would prefer to play a tuneup tournament leading into the French Open. It remains to be seen if that will happen.
Novak Djokovic celebrates a game win against Jack Draper during their fourth-round match at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif., Wednesday, March 11, 2026.
We know that he has no intentions of retiring anytime soon. He wants to participate in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
He is the undisputed GOAT of menâs tennis and winning the gold medal in Paris in 2024 was the only missing piece of his lengthy resume and list of accomplishments.
Djokovic is excellent at keeping his body in competitive condition; however, age is something that inevitably wins. He will be 39 on May 22.
