Netflix announces release date for “Rafa” documentary

The long awaited Rafael Nadal documentary entitled “Rafa”, produced by Netflix, finally has an airdate.

Nadal retired from professional tennis in 2024, and many expected the documentary to stream in 2025.

The persistent delays are finally over.

Rafa will be released May 29

It is fitting that Rafa will drop on May 29 in the middle of the French Open. Nadal won the tournament a record setting 14 times, and in 2025, there was an on-court celebration to honor him.

The other reason it seems the right time to air this is because Nadal turns 40 on June 3.

Fans are used to celebrating Rafa every spring either at the French Open or shortly thereafter on his birthday.

Nadal in the news

Nadal has not exactly been kicking up his feet and relaxing during his tennis retirement. The Rafa Nadal Academy is thriving, and two of its pupils, Spaniard Martin Landaluce and Filipina Alexandra Eala, are becoming household names on the ATP and WTA Tours, respectively.

He has also been seen as recently as last week, with a racquet in hand, collaborating with his former coach Francisco Roig in helping Iga Swiatek with her game.

The “King of Clay”, as Nadal is known, helping Swiatek who has four French Open titles of her own seemed “criminal” to some, as humorously noted by The Player’s Box podcast hosts, Madison Keys, Jessica Pegula, Jennifer Brady, and Desirae Krawczyk.

What to expect from the Netflix documentary

The trailer indicates we will see the behind-the-scenes work Nadal was doing at the latter stages of his career to stay healthy enough to compete.

It looks like it will be emotional and inspiring just like Nadal himself.
