Daniil Medvedev smashes racket after historic double bagel at Monte Carlo

A tennis racket had a hard time staying intact during the Monte Carlo Masters on Wednesday, as Daniil Medvedev broke his racket into pieces during his match with Matteo Berrettini.

Medvedev certainly had good reason to destroy his racket, as Berrettini took apart his game in a quick 49 minutes for a 6-0, 6-0 rout. The double bagel loss was the first in the career of Medvedev, who won the 2021 U.S. Open and is currently ranked 10th in the world.

During the match, Medvedev’s game fell apart, with five double-faults and winning only 17 points.

In his initial service game of the second set, Medvedev’s forehand hit the net, and trailing 2-0, he took it out on his racket, slamming it near the baseline. The racket suffered further damage when Medvedev threw it at a tarp.

He picked up the racket again and began smashing it, with the Monte Carlo crowd egging him on, and then tossed it into a trash can.

Medvedev received a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct and will likely be fined for his actions.
