Apr. 8—WILLMAR — Some late-match heroics helped Sauk Rapids spoil the Willmar boys tennis team’s home opener.

The Storm were 3-1 in three-set matches in a 4-3 victory over the Cardinals on Wednesday at Willmar High School.

It was both teams’ season opener.

Two of Sauk Rapids’ three singles wins came in three sets. Liam Mick won at No. 2 singles over Willmar’s Samuel Loerzel, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5. Levi Leyk added another three-set win at No. 4 singles over Mason Munkholm, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.

At No. 1 doubles, the Storm’s Shane Jansky and Braxton Schmidt beat Willmar’s Nehemiah Van Horne and Camden Lager, 7-5, 1-6, 6-4.

Two of Willmar’s wins came in doubles play. Preston Kath and Lucas Riemersma won 6-1, 6-4 over Brenden Nathe and Asher Hinz to clinch the No. 2 doubles match. Ethan Eckhoff and JD Swenson added a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles over Zach Dowell and Ollie Peterson.

The Cardinals’ singles win came courtesy of Deven Hegreberg. He won No. 3 singles in three sets over Taishan Mehta, 6-2, 4-6, 10-8.

Willmar plays Holy Family Catholic and Redwood Valley in a triangular at 3 p.m. Friday at Redwood Falls.
