Carlos Alcaraz is currently back home in Murcia, getting ready for the start of the clay-court season.

After being surprised by Sebastian Korda in the Miami Open third round, he’s now focusing on what’s always a busy stretch of the year.

Alcaraz has more than 3,000 ATP ranking points to defend over this stretch, and the 22-year-old has already started his preparations for the upcoming events.

Despite sitting at world number one, he still believes there are parts of his game that need fine-tuning. His coach, Samuel Lopez, recently spoke about those areas ahead of Monte-Carlo.

Lopez outlines what Alcaraz is working on ahead of the clay-court season

“Yes, without a doubt tennis has evolved a lot around the first shots — the serve and the plus one, and the return and the plus one,” Lopez said in an interview with Eurosport.

“Carlos is a very lively player on court, who likes to move forward a lot, and we’re also working a lot on that, on continuing to develop it.

“We’re also working on incorporating shots where he has more control, the slice, for better defence or changes of rhythm. There are always things to improve.

“But I would say one thing: the serve, of course, has improved, but it still needs to keep improving, not in terms of power, but in terms of precision and percentages. And on return it’s the same.

“Today there are all kinds of statistics and on return he’s number one or number two while on serve he’s quite a bit further behind.

“So we need to improve especially on the serve, without trying to have a serve like Isner’s, but improving in those aspects.”

Alcaraz is due to take part in the Monte-Carlo Masters, which starts on April 5th. The Spaniard will be defending 1,000 ATP ranking points at this year’s event after beating Lorenzo Musetti in last year’s final.
