Frances Tiafoeâs run at the 2026 Miami Open came to an abrupt halt in the quarterfinals, where he was stopped by Jannik Sinner.
Sinner, who is aiming to become just the eighth man to complete the Sunshine Double, took control of the match early and never let up. He secured a 6-2, 6-2 win in just one hour and 10 minutes, marking his fifth career victory over Tiafoe.
Tiafoe had a solid tournament leading up to that point, with wins over Arthur Cazaux, defending champion Jakub Mensik, and Terence Atmane.
Despite being outclassed by Sinner on this occasion, Tiafoe stayed positive about his overall performance during the tournament.
Frances Tiafoe shares his thoughts after loss to Jannik Sinner
Speaking in his press conference after the match, Tiafoe said: âAll seasonâs been good. A really, really good start for me so far. Obviously, youâve just got to be a bit better in these matches.
âI played some Top 5 guys, Top 10 guys and havenât played, ultimately, my best, but Iâm really happy with what Iâve been doing.
âI have Houston next. Iâm pretty excited to get out there and play on clay and be able to push guys and compete. Itâs going to be fun.
âNormally, Iâm like, âItâs going to be an uphill battleâ, but now I feel great. I feel great physically. I have a great mental headspace.
âI won a lot of matches. I pulled out some crazy matches. I think the North American swing was great for me from Mexico to here.â
Frances Tiafoe set to begin clay season in Houston after Miami exit
Following his quarter-final loss in Miami, Tiafoe will head to Texas to kick off his clay-court campaign at the US Menâs Clay Court Championships in Houston.
Tiafoe won the Houston title back in 2023 and has reached the final for three consecutive years, though he fell short of reclaiming the trophy in both 2024 and 2025.
He was beaten by Ben Shelton in 2024, while last yearâs final saw him lose out to Jenson Brooksby. In total, he picked up 165 ATP points from his run last season, which heâll aim to defend this time around.
Tiafoe also made a breakthrough at Roland Garros last year by reaching the quarter-finals for the first time, following several seasons of early exits from the tournament.
