Coco Gauff took down Belinda Bencic 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 in the Miami Open quarterfinals.

But it wasn’t all smooth sailing for the American.

Gauff had a tough time during the second set and even fell behind by a break in the third.

She managed to claw her way back, securing her spot in the semi-finals. After the match, she spoke to reporters about how things unfolded.

“I felt like in the first set, even though I lost that ‘lead’, I felt I was kind of cruising and the second just got away from me really fast,” she said.

“Once it was 5-1, I was like, okay, we’re going to the third set.

“I think that third set was really just will.

“I lost that 40-0 game and I was really upset with myself.

“It was not like she hit four return winners; it was points that were on my racket.”

She finished strongly as well with a unique match point, which also pleased her.

“That match point was kind of funny, because yesterday I hit really bad drop shots on break points and I told myself that I was not going to hit any drop shots on any important points,” Gauff said.

“But sometimes you just play tennis, and you’re not even thinking, and I think it’s the best when you play when you are not thinking.”

No one left in the field has spent more time playing than Gauff. It could become a factor as things progress through the semifinals. We’ll find out soon enough.

Sophie Amiach reacts to Gauff’s Miami Open quarterfinal win

Former Grand Slam quarterfinalist Sophie Amiach was impressed by Gauff’s performance in Miami.

“I don’t know what to say except, dropshot galore!” Amiach told Sky Sports.

“Can she hit her dropshot any better tonight?

“On that match point, even though Bencic got to that one…

“What a match, what a third set.

“Coco Gauff, spectacular tonight, absolutely spectacular.”

Bencic currently sits 12th in the Live WTA Rankings.

Only time will tell if Bencic can return to the top 10. She’ll have a chance to do so at the upcoming Charleston Open, which begins on Monday, March 30.
