Fran Jones pulled off one of the most significant wins of her career by beating Venus Williams at the Miami Open.
While Williams may not be the force she once was, Jones still looked impressive as she closed out a straight-sets victory.
Jones also spoke respectfully about Williams after the win, which sets up a second-round meeting with Jessica Pegula.
And by getting past the American great, Jones has now done something that no other WTA player has ever accomplished before.
Fran Jonesâ incredible achievement against Venus Williams
Williams hasnât picked up a win in her first six tournaments of the year, but that doesnât take anything away from what Jones accomplished.
Jones looked settled from the start, even while facing one of the players she grew up admiring.
The win also marks a significant milestone for her career. Sheâs become the first player to earn her first WTA 1000 victory against a former world number one, according to OptaAce.
On top of that, Jones was on the verge of slipping out of the top 100, so this result couldnât have come at a better time for her.
Fran Jones has developed a habit of beating big American names
It hasnât been the easiest start to the year for Fran Jones, whoâs been dealing with fitness issues. But despite that, sheâs still put together some solid results.
Her win over Venus wasnât the first time sheâs pulled off an upset against a top American this season.
Back at the start of 2026, she beat Emma Navarro in the opening round of the ASB Classic and went on to reach the quarter-finals of that tournament.
The Williams victory also snapped a three-match losing streak in main draws, making it even more important for her confidence.
Now, if she wants to keep her run going in Miami, sheâll need to pull off another surprise against Jessica Pegula next.
