Former US Open champion worried after rare retirement in Indian Wells
Coco Gauff faces a race against time ahead of the Miami Open after suffering a concerning arm injury during her match against Alexandra Eala at Indian Wells.
The American was trailing 6-2, 2-0 when she was forced to retire, later describing the sensation as feeling like a âfireworkâ going off in her arm â raising immediate concerns about the severity of the issue.
Roddick admits concern over unusual Gauff injury
Andy Roddick has voiced his worries, stressing that Gauffâs decision to retire is particularly alarming given her track record.
âItâs never good to see Coco pull out,â he said on the Served podcast. âSheâs not someone who retires from matches or gives in easily.â
Roddick highlighted her professionalism and resilience as key reasons for concern. âShe leans into tough moments and shows up week after week. Sheâs one of the most professional players Iâve seen at her age.â
That context makes the injury stand out even more. âIt probably means we should be genuinely concerned about this arm situation,â he added. âHopefully itâs nothing serious.â
He also pointed to the dilemma facing her team ahead of Miami. âIf sheâs not feeling right, itâs a tough balance. She plays a heavy schedule and doesnât usually take time off.â
Miami Open presents opportunity â if Gauff is fit
Journalist Jon Wertheim also weighed in, noting the uncertainty around injuries in tennis compared to other sports.
âWe donât always get clear information,â he said. âPlayers can look in real trouble one day and still come back quickly.â
With Miami effectively a home event for Gauff, there is added incentive for her to compete â especially as she enters as the fourth seed and receives a bye into the second round.
She could face Elisabetta Cocciaretto in her opening match, with a potential third-round clash against Maria Sakkari awaiting if she progresses.
From a rankings perspective, the tournament offers a valuable opportunity. Gauff earned 120 points from reaching the fourth round last year, meaning a title run this time would bring an additional 880 points.
However, the challenge is significant. Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina arrive in strong form after their runs in Indian Wells and will be among the favourites in Florida.
Still, if fully fit, Gauff remains one of the most dangerous players in the draw â making her fitness the key variable heading into the tournament.
