Novak Djokovic explains turning point after Indian Wells defeat

Novak Djokovic spoke about the moment that changed the momentum of the match after his Indian Wells defeat, with video shared by Tennis Channel on X showing the Serbian describing the rally that left him exhausted.

Djokovic pointed to a physically draining point late in the match as the moment his energy levels suddenly dropped.

“Yeah, I mean, it cost me a break after, you know. It was great winning that point in that game, but I just, like, ran completely out of gas and just started to feel a bit better towards basically end of the third,” Djokovic admitted.

The Serbian had battled through a long and intense match at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California, one of the ATP Tour’s biggest Masters 1000 events.

But despite winning the exhausting rally he referenced, Djokovic explained that the effort required to take the point ultimately left him with little energy for the following games.

The drop in physical intensity allowed his opponent to seize momentum as the match progressed.

Novak Djokovic reveals stomach problem during Indian Wells match

Djokovic also acknowledged that he was dealing with a physical issue during the match, suggesting the problem contributed to his lack of energy on court.

“My stomach, mostly my stomach, and then it creates a problem with breathing. But, it’s all good, I don’t really want to talk about that now,” Djokovic stated.

Djokovic has previously battled through physical issues during matches throughout his career, often continuing to compete despite visible discomfort.

However, the Indian Wells defeat showed how quickly momentum can shift at the highest level when physical energy drops, even for one of the most decorated players in tennis history.

After the match, Djokovic attempted to downplay the issue and focused instead on moving forward as the ATP Tour heads toward the next stage of the Sunshine Double.
