Matteo Berrettini has been working hard behind the scenes with new coach Thomas Enqvist ahead of his run at Indian Wells.

Berrettini meets Adrian Mannarino in his opening match of the tournament in California, which is the first ATP Masters 1000 event of the season.

The experienced Italian has played three tournaments in 2026 so far, entering Indian Wells with a 3-3 win-loss record.

Berrettini, who started the season by withdrawing from the Australian Open due to injury, has now provided an update on his latest efforts with Enqvist.

Matteo Berrettini working on ‘positive energy’ with Thomas Enqvist

Berrettini told Sky Sport Italy: “Thomas is a great person; I worked with him at the Laver Cup and we got along well.

“We’re working on our energy, on bringing positive energy to the court.”

And sharing his goals after experiencing constant injury issues, he said: “I’m getting back into the game, finding new energy and motivation.

“It’s a process that began last summer and has already yielded results, like my Davis Cup victory.

“The goal is to play a lot of matches, play well, have fun, and achieve even more success.”

Matteo Berrettini’s form heading into Indian Wells

Berrettini has struggled for consistency of late, although that is very understandable given his unfortunate injury problems.

After withdrawing from the Australian Open, where he was scheduled to open against home favorite Alex de Minaur, he fell in the Argentina Open round of 16.

The Italian ace then enjoyed a quarterfinal run in Rio, but followed that up by losing his opening match in Chile.

After three successive clay tournaments, the 29-year-old now turns his focus to the hard courts of the Sunshine Double.

That starts with Indian Wells, which is now underway in California, and is followed by another ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Miami.

A first title since 2024 seems unlikely for Berrettini, who will instead be prioritizing staying fit and enjoying his time on the court.

But a return to success in the near future cannot be ruled out, with the popular figure currently seeking an 11th career title.
