Flavio Cobolli clinched the Mexican Open title, securing the third ATP trophy of his career by defeating Frances Tiafoe in the final.

The Italian was impressive throughout, winning in straight sets and picking up 500 valuable ranking points in the process.

Cobolli has long been seen as a potential challenger to Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, and he has now broken into the top 15 of the ATP rankings for the first time.

His win in Mexico marks another step forward, matching a milestone that only the two best in the world have reached over the past year.

With his win in Acapulco, Cobolli now holds ATP 500 titles on two different surfaces, adding to his earlier triumph at the Hamburg Open on clay.

That puts him in rare company, as only two other active players have managed that feat over the past year – and they happen to be the top two ranked players in the world.

Alcaraz stands alone in having won titles across all three surfaces over the past year, with three clay-court wins, one on grass, and five more on hard courts.

Sinner has not claimed a clay court title during that span, but did secure Wimbledon on grass and added four hard-court trophies late in the 2025 season.

Flavio Cobolli pulls off stunning reversal to start season

Cobolli’s 2026 ATP Tour campaign got off to a rough start, managing just one win in his first five matches.

He was knocked out in the opening rounds of both the Australian Open and the Dallas Open by British players, with Arthur Fery and Jack Pinnington Jones getting the better of him.

Heading into the Mexican Open, Cobolli had a concerning 3-5 record. But after five straight wins in Acapulco, he is now up to 8-5.

Now he heads to Indian Wells full of confidence, hoping to turn around another tricky record.

The Italian has not yet won a match at the Masters event in his first two attempts, losing in the first round to Colton Smith and Ben Shelton over the past two seasons.

This time around, Cobolli has already bypassed that hurdle thanks to a first-round bye earned through his improved ranking.

The early-season title may give him an edge heading into one of tennis’ marquee events.
