Coco Gauff is still having issues with her serve, despite working with a biomechanics expert for almost half a year.

Gauff brought in Gavin MacMillan last August, hoping he could help sort out the problems that have held back her serve.

MacMillan’s name carries weight in tennis circles. He is credited with helping Aryna Sabalenka overhaul her serve before.

Even so, the changes have not fully stuck yet. The 21-year-old is still racking up double faults more often than she would like.

Now, Rick Macci – who once coached Venus and Serena Williams – recently shared his thoughts on how Gauff can make progress with her serve.

Macci remains a respected voice in tennis and continues to weigh in on the latest happenings across both tours.

The American coach, who has worked with notable players like Andy Roddick and Maria Sharapova, acknowledges the recent problem with double-faults on Gauff’s serve but maintains that overall progress has been made.

Posting on X (formerly Twitter), he said: “Coco and her serve is biomechanically better.

“Gavin identified the real problems and I see it is stabilized. But because she is double-jointed and her wires are so free flowing she has more shake and bake that causes extra movements in the arm without trying.

“I would go to a tight platform stance and put her on lockdown from the ground. Be in a cylinder bubble and no more double.”

If Gauff decides to follow that advice, it would mean a big change to how she prepares for her serve.

The 21-year-old American currently uses what is known as a pinpoint stance, where she brings her back foot up next to her front foot during the loading phase of her service motion.

If she were to switch over to a platform stance, it would involve keeping both feet apart for the entire service action.

What Coco Gauff has said about her serve since bringing on Gavin MacMillan

After beating Alja Tomljanovic in the first round of the US Open, Gauff spoke about the changes she was planning to make to her serve.

As reported by Olympics.com, she said: “I think it’s all mechanics. Now it actually makes sense, and now it’s just really trusting that new motion in those moments.

“When I do it, it’s always a good result – it’s just reminding myself how to do it. I’m trying not to become as obsessed with it, but it is a bit because this is the part of my game that needs to improve if I want to get the results that I want.

“It’s a new motion, at times I can do it well, at times not so well. When I do it, it’s always a good result – it’s just reminding myself how to do it.”

The draw for Indian Wells will be announced on Monday when Gauff finds out who she will be facing next.

The furthest she has gone in Indian Wells came in 2024 when she reached the semi-finals before losing out to Maria Sakkari.

In 2025, she made her way through to the fourth round where Belinda Bencic ended her run.
