Canyon tennis set for state semifinal match against Texarkana Pleasant Grove in Waco

One year after Randall took home the UIL team tennis state title, another CISD program has a shot to hoist the trophy this season.

Canyon’s team tennis squad punched its ticket to the state semifinals in Waco with a 10-2 win against Randall, the defending state champions, on Friday, Oct. 10.

Team tennis is a fall sport that features a grouped score based on singles, doubles and mixed doubles results. Rather than individuals advancing to state on their own or as part of a doubles pairing, each individual match counts towards the entire group’s final score.

Canyon defeated Graham, Brock, Vernon and Seminole to reach the regional finals, where the Eagles took down the Raiders in Abilene, advancing to the UIL tournament.

Next, David DeLeon’s team will meet Texarkana Pleasant Grove at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 22, from the Waco Regional Tennis Center for a Class 4A state semifinal match. The winner of that contest will square off against either Wimberley or Franklin for a UIL title at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 23, at the Hurd Tennis Center on the campus of Baylor University.

Winberley reached the state semifinals in 2024, but fell to Darby Norman’s team after defeating Randall in the state title match the previous year.

Canyon enters its match against the Hawks with a 25-2 record, compared to an 11-2 mark for Pleasant Grove.

Tickets for the event will be $15 for single-day passes and $25 for tournament passes, according to the UIL.
